Action-A-Day, Tuesday 2/20/18, Support Gun Safety Measures in Maryland: Say No to Rapid Fire Devices, No to the Bump Stock!

1). Call your Maryland State Delegates and Senator and ask them to support gun safety measures coming up before them.  Specifically HB 888 and SB 707 which state in part:

“ for the purpose of prohibiting a person from transporting rapid-fire trigger activators into the state;  or manufacturing, possessing, selling, offering to sell, transferring, purchasing, or receiving rapid-fire trigger activators in the commission of a crime.”

Sample Script:  Delegate or Senator _________________________, I support the Constitution including the Bill of Rights and the 2nd Amendment.  However, I also am in favor of sensible regulations on the sale, possession and use of equipment which has no place in civil society.  I want you to support HB 888, and SB 707 the Rapid Fire Trigger Activator Crime Bill.  I want my schools and streets to be safer for all of us.

Other things you can do in support of Gun Violence Prevention:

1)  Call members of Congress AND state legislators and ask them what they're doing to:

**ban bump stocks

**stop concealed carry reciprocity from undermining state gun control laws (Congress only)

**put universal background controls in place and

**promote the use of gun safes, trigger locks and smart gun technology that can keep us safe.

2) Join a Gun Violence Prevention Group such as :

** Moms Demand Action.

** EveryTown for Gun Safety

3). Sign up for The Trace, for information about Gun Safety and Gun Violence Prevention

A bump stock provides anyone with a few hundred dollars, the opportunity to create a nearly automatic gun.  It is the alternative to the thousands of dollars required for a fully automated machine gun.  And unlike a machine gun which must be registered with the FBI, a bump stock or rapid fire mechanism currently does not have to be reported to any law enforcement agency. Effectively, this device can make anyone with a few hundred dollars the owner of an assault arsenal.

On October 1, 2017 the Las Vegas gunman did just that.  58 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured.  In response nothing changed at the Federal level.  However, several states have taken this safety measure up.  Maryland often leads the way in cutting edge legislative measures.  This is one of those times where we need to lead the way. Rapid Fire Activator Bills are before the Maryland House and Senate.  And the legislature needs your encouragement to do the right thing in regulating Rapid Fire Devices.  As individual citizens, we can't have ground to air rocket launchers, we can't own tanks or nuclear devices and we don't holler no to those regulations.  Common sense says we should support this legislative regulation now.

A hearing is scheduled for 2/28/18 at 1:00 pm in both the House of Delegates and Senate.
