Action-A-Day 3/9: Ask Congress to Support Medicare for All

ACTION: Call and/or write to Congress to ask them to support Medicare for All in lieu of the deeply flawed GOP proposed "Amercian Health Care Act"

SAMPLE SCRIPTS:

FOR PHONE CALLS - Please communicate the information below in a way that feels natural to you!
·         If Harris is your representative:  "Hi, my name is [name].  I live in [town], zip code 21xxx.  I’m calling to encourage Rep. Harris tovote against repealing and replacing the ACA with the American Health Care Act and instead replace it with Expanded and Improved Medicare for All as described in H.R. 676.  Please vote against repealing the ACA and work to pass H.R. 676.  This is a very personal issue for me – universal care is a matter of life and death.  Thank you, and I don't need a response.”

You can substitute a more personal one-liner particular to you – eg: “My daughter has cancer – universal care is a matter of life and death,” or “I can’t afford my medication – Medicare for All is necessary right now.”  Don’t get into details beyond one sentence.

·         If Raskin is your representative: "Hi, my name is [name].  I live in [town], zip code 21xxx.  I’m calling to thank Rep. Raskin forfighting the repealof the ACA while working to replace it with H.R. 676, Expanded and Improved Medicare for All.  This is a very personal issue for me – universal care is a matter of life and death.  Thank you, and I don't need a response.”

Van Hollen/Cardin] for fighting the repeal of the ACA.  However I strongly encourage him to work to replace it with Expanded and Improved Medicare for All. Please offer a companion bill to H.R. 676.  This is a very personal issue for me – universal care is a matter of life and death.  Thank you, and I don't need a response.”

FOR POSTCARD WRITING:

Make is short and sweet.  Include a short hand version of the information for phone calls.

FOR LETTER WRITING:  In a letter, we encourage you to tell a personal story.  It can be brief or long, but it should be personal.  It should communicate the need to reject the newly proposed American Healthcare Act, but offer H.R. 676 Expanded and Improved Medicare for All as the necessary option moving forward.  Explain that insurance is not healthcare, and only a national healthcare system can provide universal, affordable care for less cost and with better outcomes.  Finally, explain that it is always time to save people’s lives (Democrats always claim that now is “not the time” for single payer).  If you have a picture of a sick family member or of yourself, include that too.

BACKGROUND INFO:  Republicans have introduced their plan to repeal the ACA and replace it with the American Health Care Act (AHCA).  Among its many problematic aspects, the AHCA has the largest negative impact on lower income people; for example, it will eliminate means-based subsidies and eliminate the Medicaid expansion.  It will have the most positive impact on the highest income people; for example, it will give tax cuts and other benefits to insurance companies and the very wealthiest families. Many people on the ACA will be left without the coverage they currently have.

Democrats acknowledge that Medicare for All (single payer) is the best way to go, but they are playing defense on the ACA and more importantly, don’t have the political will to fight for Medicare for All.   H.R. 676 Expanded and Improved Medicare for All, is a bill that has been introduced in the House of Representatives.  This would create a national healthcare system that we pay for collectively, but deliver privately through our doctor of choice.  No premiums, copays or deductibles.  You get sick (or need a checkup) you get treated without out-of-pocket expenses and without complicated paperwork.  All of our peer nations (and many less developed nations) already have this type of a system.  We need to help our representatives find the political will to fight for this human right, and bring the U.S. out of the dark ages on this issue.

**THANKS TO ROXANNA OF HEALTHCARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT (CARROLL COUNTY CHAPTER) FOR DRAFTING THIS CALL TO ACTION**
