Action-A-Day 3/30: Support Federal Employees

Please write to Congress to Support federal employees:

Ask your Senators to vote NO on H.R. 1259 (currently in Senate), H.R. 1364 and H.R. 1461
Ask your Representatives to vote NO on H.R. 1364 and H.R. 1461 (H.R. 1259 passed the house 3/16)

According to Richard Trumka, President, AFL-CIO, these bills harm workers. He says they

--Remove protections and gut the pensions of workers who are wrongfully fired, harassed or intimidated by managers;

--Make it more difficult for employees to work with managers to address issues on the job;

--Give Veterans Affairs officials the power to take back compensation employees have earned;

--Let management at the VA have the upper hand by radically shortening the time unfairly fired VA workers have to prepare their cases; and

--Limit the time unfairly fired workers can appeal to just seven days.

SCRIPT:

I’m writing you to ask you to oppose H.R. 1259, H.R. 1364 and H.R. 1461. These bills do nothing to improve government. Instead, they attack the rights of federal employees to do their job effectively to serve veterans and other taxpayers.

Please vote NO on H.R. 1259, H.R. 1364 and H.R. 1461.

A variation on a poem:

(AFSCME Council 26 Executive Director Carl Goldman, based on a poem by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller)
First they came for the Environmental Protection Agency,
but I didn’t work there so I said nothing,
Then they came for the Department of Education,
but I don’t work there so I said nothing,
Then they came for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,
but I don’t work there so I said nothing,
Then they came for the Department of Justice,
but I don’t work there so I said nothing,
Then they came for the Federal unions, but I was not a member, so I said nothing,
Then they came for me, my rights and my job—but there was no one left to speak for me.
