Action-A-Day for 11/29: Protect Public Safety: Stop Concealed Carry Reciprocity

The House Judiciary Committee could vote today (11/29) on H.R. 38, “Concealed Carry Reciprocity” (CCR)— a chaotic and dangerous policy that would gut every state’s gun laws and make our communities less safe. Right now, every state sets its own rules for who can carry a hidden, loaded handgun in public. There is no national standard for who can carry hidden, loaded handguns in public, and rather than create a uniform standard, CCR would effectively turn the weakest state’s laws into nationwide laws. #StopCCR

IMPACT OF CONCEALED CARRY RECIPROCITY
Under this legislation, residents of states that do not require concealed carry permits could travel to any other state and carry their concealed weapon without any permit.

Law enforcement organizations, including the Law Enforcement Coalition for Common Sense, have opposed concealed carry reciprocity, noting that it would make it nearly impossible for police to confirm if a person with a concealed weapon is carrying the weapon legally.

H.R. 38 (and its companion Senate bill, S.446) would allow gun owners to sue police for even attempting to verify the status of their permits, according to The Trace and Everytown for Gun Safety.

SUGGESTED SCRIPTS (Reword in your own words)
For House Judiciary Committee:
" I'm calling to express my concern about HR 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. This legislation will open the door for near permitless carry across the country, and I ask the committee to not move this bill to the House floor for consideration."

 For Congress:
"I'm calling to express my opposition to [H.R.38 for House/S.446 for Senate]. This bill would invalidate state-level concealed carry restrictions, make it difficult for law enforcement to verify whether a weapon is legally carried, and essentially allow permitless carry across the country. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones."
