Action-A-Day: Tuesday October 24, 2017 Local Government: Who’s In Charge In Carroll County?

CALL TO ACTION AND BACKGROUND : Who should I vote for? Do I know who's running and for what offices in my local jurisdictions? In November 2018 many elections will occur. These include all five of our county commissioners here in Carroll County Maryland. Currently, four districts have incumbent or a new contender candidate, who have filed to run for office.  In District 3, one additional candidate has filed to oppose Dennis Frazier.   *Note Mr. Rothschild has indicated that he is likely to file for District 4.

We say that all government is local. Yet how close are we paying attention to what is happening in our own backyards? This week two Carroll County Commissioners are holding Town-hall meetings and one is holding a community-citizen work session meeting. These are opportunities for you to meet, greet, question and give feedback to your County Commissioner. It is also time to hear what is happening in the county from their point of view. And it's a time to determine whether you are adequately represented in this county.  Do you have the representation you need for the issues you care about?

Some of these issues include education, budget, property taxes, land-use, planning, adequate roads andtransportation, business, community, and public safety.  What do you want from your tax dollars? Are you satisfied with how our taxes are spent? Who sits on the Board of Zoning appeals? The Planning and Zoning Commission?   The Long Term Advisory Committee?  How are they appointed? How can you apply for these citizen boards? How does someone run for School Board? County Commissioner? Sheriff? County Clerk?

  1. Make plans to attend the upcoming town halls or work session in your district or a neighboring district.  Meet and talk to three county commissioners.  This week is an ideal opportunity.  (For additional information see the attached press releases below)
