Action-A-Day 1/18/18: Solicit GOP support for Net Neutrality restoration

Action-A-Day 1/18/18: Solicit GOP support for Net Neutrality restoration

ACTION: Call GOP members of the Senate Finance Committee’s Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet subcommittee 202-224-1251 to ask them to vote to reinstate net neutrality rules.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: I support "Title Two" net neutrality rules and I would like the members of this subcommittee to vote in support of the Congressional Act to reinstate net neutrality rules. We don’t need legislation, we need you to undo the harm done by the FCC in gutting the existing rules.

BACKGROUND INFO: Monday 1/15/18 Senators announced that all 47 Dems and 2 Ind, along with Rep Susan Collins of Maine, are fighting to force a vote to restore net neutrality rules by an act of Congress. Net neutrality ensures fair access to the internet content. Cable companies are famous for high prices and poor service. Several rank as the most hated companies in America. They've lobbied the FCC and Congress to end net neutrality. Why? It's simple: if they win the power to slow sites down, they can bully any site into paying millions to escape the "slow lane”. This would amount to a tax on every sector of the American economy. Every site would cost more, since they'd all have to pay big cable. Worse, it would extinguish the startups and independent voices who can't afford to pay. If we lose net neutrality, the Internet will never be the same. Attorney Generals from 22 states have filed suit against the FCC in response to the net neutrality repeal.

Exirules are not being fairly or adequately applied to protect each and every student from harm. We must recognize the realities of our present day. We need calm heads to make decisions that are in the best interest of each and every student. A tacit acceptance of any form of intimidation toward any student is not acceptable.  Not Ever.

Action-A-Day 1/11/18: No More Parental Rights for Rapists

ACTION: Call your State delegation and ask that they support Maryland Senate Bill 0002 and House Bill 0001 which would allow courts to terminate parental rights for rapists and is being called the Rape Survivor Family Protection Act.

BACKGROUND: The Rape Survivor Family Protection Act has been brought before the Maryland General Assembly and has FAILED TO PASS 9 times. This bill would allow women who conceive as a result of rape to terminate the parental rights of their rapist. Presently, Maryland is one of only a handful of states that does not already have a process in place for this. The Maryland General Assembly has returned to Annapolis and Governor Hogan is very publicly pushing for this legislation to be passed.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: My name is _________ from (zip code). I am calling to ask Senator/Delegate _____________ to support the bipartisan Rape Survivor Family Protection Act. No woman should ever have to face her attacker outside a court of law, much less share custody and parental control of a child conceived by rape.

Action-A-Day for Tuesday, 1/9/18—— Follow Leadership Which Promotes Civility

Leadership and lessons can come from surprising places.  We are all accustomed to listening to our elders and experts for advice, for perspectives we may not yet have experienced.   But sometimes, we need a different wisdom that comes from the trenches.  We need a fresh voice of youth to remind us of what 'that' looks and feels like.  Someone to take us back for the “redo” that we otherwise can never have.

Action-A-Day, FOR Monday, 1/10/18 : Ask for Equal Enforcement of School Policies!

Across the country in our schools, icons of hatred and destruction are being allowed on articles of clothing, backpacks, phone cases and more.  Some say they are merely historical symbols.  Meanwhile aggressive attitudes and de-meaning actions and often violence are resultant.  When a policy exists, it must be followed and if necessary, enforced.  It's time to request, to expect, equal enforcement of our school policies so all students can excel in their learning environments.

There is still hope in the Senate to stop this bill. But calls need to be made today!  This bill is still unpopular because it increases the debt, harms Dreamers, increases the widening financial inequality gap, and hurts people in the working classes the most

Action-A-Day Tuesday, 11/28/17——— Tax Reform Bill: Call These Swing Vote Senators!
Nov

Action-A-Day Tuesday, 11/28/17——— Tax Reform Bill: Call These Swing Vote Senators!

CALL TO ACTION —— Call your Senators and these swing vote Senators ( listed below) to soften tax reform and insist that it is equitable for all all Americans.  Your calls may also help codify DACA, save Healthcare repeal (AGAIN), and save all tax payers a heavy burden of tax increases over time.

TO DO NOW/THIS WEEK——Make calls to the Senate:

1). Call your Senators now. Ask them to vote against the Tax Reform Bill!

2) Call the GOP members of the Senate on the list below and help persuade them to also vote NO to the Tax Reform Bill.  Each of the following Senators already have the reservations listed below.  Encourage them in their No vote!

3). Engage your friends, family and rapid response teams to also make calls to their Senators and the list of Senators provided.

Call these members of the Senate now:

Susan Collins of Maine.  (202) 224-2523  She is concerned that the tax bill repeals Obamacare health protections. She also wants SALT ( State and local tax credit) to remain in the tax code.

Bob Corker of Tennessee. (202) 224-3344 He is concerned mostly that this bill increases the deficit. Encourage him to vote no.

Jeff Flake of Arizona.  (202) 224-4521 He is concerned this bill increases the deficit. Encourage him to vote no.

John McCain of Arizona. (202) 224-2235 He is concerned that this bill increases the deficit.  He is also worried that hard-working Americans will be paying higher taxes under this bill while wealthy Americans in the top 1% will pay less for nothing.

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. (202) 224-6665  She wants the tax bill separated from healthcare repeal and she wants the healthcare markets stabilized before tax reform continues.

Rand Paul of Kentucky. (202) 224-4343  He wants the corporate tax rate lowered from 35% as it is now, and the 20% that is in this tax bill, down to 15%. He also has stated he will not vote for the Reform Bill if any other provisions are removed. While his reasons support “bad” tax reform policy, his No Vote helps the progressive and fair causes, of reasonable tax reform.

Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. (202) 224-5323 He is concerned this bill codifies passthrough tax exemptions for the wealthy, allowing business owners and large corporate owners to avoid paying any personal taxes by claiming all their money is part and parcel of their business.

Joe Donnelly of Indiana. (202) 224-5323  He is on the fence. Encourage him that this bill is bad for working people. Let him know that this tax reform hurts those Americans who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families through education and hard work.

Jerry Moran of Kansas.  (202) 224-6521  He opposes the repeal of Obamacare in the tax code;  he does not want individual health insurance mandates mixed with tax policies. He also is concerned with increasing the debt and and the deficit.

James Lankford of Oklahoma.  (202) 224-5754 Is concerned with the tax bills impact on the federal debt. He wants the bill amended to address those concerns.

BACKGROUND —— Many of us have made calls to our congressional representatives already.  But NOW is the time to call our Senate members and engage with the Senators of other states to help persuade them that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Reform Bill is actually Bad for OUR Democratic Republic.  This bill will change the laws which currently govern the IRS tax system permanently.  Many additional items are hidden in this tax code which eliminate protections for healthcare, Medicare, Medicaid, DACA, and immigration. All while increasing your tax bill, cutting your benefits under the existing laws and cutting provisions for other necessities.  It allows pass through taxation for wealthy corporations allowing millionaire/billionaire business owners to avoid paying any taxes.  It eliminates all estate taxes, allowing for the accumulation of wealth for the top of the wealthiest Americans, increasing their power and limiting 99% of Americans say or effective power in government.  Radically speaking, this bill is the next CitizensUnited step towards moving America into Oligarchy and away from Democracy.

Support keeping the Johnson Amendment.  It protects the integrity of houses of worship and our elections. Current law ensures that houses of worship aren’t transformed into political tools by candidates seeking power. That is likely why the vast majority of Americans believe houses of worship should stay out of partisan campaigns. No one wants our charities to be torn apart by partisan campaign politics.

Action-A-Day 11/9: Save our National Forests

ACTION: Call Maryland Senators Chris VanHollen 202-224-4654 and Ben Cardin 202-224-4524 and ask them to vote NO on HR 2936!

SAMPLE SCRIPT: My name is _______________ from [zip code] and I am calling to ask Senator ________ to vote NO on HR 2936 “Resilient Federal Forests Act of 2017”. This bill aids the logging industry and has little to no regard for the health and conservation of our National Forests. Wildfires are a serious problem, but large scale logging projects without environmental safeguards or public input put us at even greater risk.

BACKGROUND INFO: On 11/1/17 the House passed HR 2936 “Resilient Federal Forests Act of 2017” with a vote of 232 to 188.

The bill is touted as bi-partisan legislation that will strengthen our national lands. However, only 10 of the votes in favor were from Dems and provisions in the bill do far more harm than good.

The bill does nothing to lessen the burden of firefighting costs in the Forest Service’s annual budget. Instead, it puts an emphasis on approving massive logging projects to remove trees and make way for roads in an effort to prevent widespread forest fires.

A waiver listed in the bill would allow projects of 30,000 acres to be approved without a review of the environmental impacts. Additionally, the waiver would not require that the public be notified of the impact, a requirement currently in place under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Massive logging projects can be detrimental to native habitats for the endangered plant and animal species that reside there. Our national forests are home to over 400 threatened or endangered species or animals.

Action-A-Day— Tuesday, 11/7/17 Call Congress Quickly! Say NO to the ‘Tax Cuts and Jobs Act”

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 is a tax reform bill which is crafted to help the wealthy avoid paying their fair share in taxes. If implemented, this bill would result in the transfer of great wealth from the working class to the rich and will continue to exacerbate income inequality in this country, leaving the middle class and poor much worse off than they've been in decades.

BACKGROUND INFO: On Monday, October 30, 2017, Robert Mueller announced his first indictments regarding the continuing investigation into Russia’s involvement and possible collusion with the Trump campaign in 2016. Three individuals have so far been named and arrested.  Trump has continually denied any involvement and he has lied and attempted multiple times to stop this investigation.  For some time he has signaled an intent to try to fire Special Investigator Robert Mueller.  The speculation seems to center on who is charged and/or whatever Trump’s ‘mood’ is on any given day.  Trump has admitted that he fired FBI Director James Comey because he didn’t like how he was conducting the Russia investigation.  It is entirely possible he will try to do the same thing with Mueller.  Many people believe the future of the Republic is dependent upon the public’s response as well as that of Congress and other members of this White House. Donald Trump is publicly considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller, the person leading the Department of Justice investigation of possible illegal actions by Donald Trump, members of his presidential campaign, and their efforts to conceal those activities. If Trump were to attempt this firing, it would be a constitutional crisis for our country. It would demand an immediate and unequivocal response to show that as Americans, we will not tolerate abuse of power from Donald Trump or anyone in the highest offices of the land.  Our response in the minutes and hours following a power grab will dictate what happens next, and whether Congress—the only body with the constitutional power and obligation to rein Trump in from his rampage—will do anything to stand up to him.
