Action-A-Day 10/23: Block HHS from removing trans rights

ACTION: Call your federal elected officials and write to HHS to let them know that you are outraged by their efforts to undermine transgender rights.

HHS Mailing Address:
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services
200 Independence Avenue, S.W.
Washington, D.C. 20201
Find your elected officials here

SAMPLE SCRIPT: Hello. My name is ____ from (state). I am contacting you to express my outrage at the HHS memo which suggests that protection from discrimination on the basis of sex only applies to sex assigned at birth. Trans rights are human rights. Transgender Americans are entitled to protections under Title IX. Suggesting otherwise places an already vulnerable population in grave danger and sets the clock back DECADES. Please protect the rights of Transgender Americans.

ACTION 2: Share this link to encourage others to sign the Pantsuit Nation letter to HHS. From Pantsuit Nation, “please sign and share our letter to the Department of Health and Human Services expressing our outrage at this proposal and our commitment to opposing any policies that attempt to limit the rights of transgender Americans”. Consider posting with #WontBeErased https://m.me/pantsuitnation11.8?ref=trans_id_entry_fb_page_1&fbclid=IwAR26kffsIprCNEhoU6XzcPvnFoLA5R7shY9qqN6vM5HHKkm4OPJmSjZEaq4

BACKGROUND: HHS, under the Trump regime, is working to create a definition for “sex” under the Civil Rights Act (Title IX) that would limit the scope to sex assigned at birth. If the definition is created, approved, and implemented, over 1.4 transgender americans would be stripped of civil rights protections. This act is an attempt to green light discrimination against transgender americans.

Action-A-Day 8/20: Help a local candidate

ACTION: Reach out to a local candidate and volunteer to help with their campaign. Local politics make a big impact and they rely heavily on grassroots efforts.

NOTE: CARROLL CAN DOES NOT ENDORSE ANY CANDIDATES. CARROLL CAN IS A NON-PARTISAN GROUP.

The information contained herein is being provided per the request of the candidates and it is being presented in the order in which we (Carroll CAN) were contacted and asked to share the information.

FROM NATALIE ZIEGLER (MD HOUSE OF DELEGATES DISTRICT 9):

My website www.Nataliefor9A.com has a place to sign up to volunteer, or you can email me at Natalie@nataliefor9A.com or email our volunteer coordinator at cgraziano@live.com. We need door knockers and people willing to put up a yard sign and people who will work the polls for early voting and Election Day, wear s t-shirt, put s magnet on your car, have a house party, talk to your neighbors. There are so many ways to get involved and some take almost no time!

FROM YSELA BRAVO-SCHWETJE (MD HOUSE OF DELEGATES DISTRICT 4):

I really need a volunteer coordinator - and more volunteers. My district covers mostly Frederick , but includes Mount Airy and Franklin area. I need signs up, car magnets on, folks to wear my shirts and ways to meet voters. I need volunteers willing to canvass. Don’t want to knock on doors? I need folks to just drop lit - no knocking involved. Signs need to be made, volunteers need to be fed, plans need to be hatched - I can use any and all talents. And finally - donations of any amount much appreciated. Ysela Bravo for House of Delegates is my Facebook page or visit me at bravo4md4.com

FROM EMILY SHANK (MD HOUSE OF DELEGATES DISTRICT 5):

My campaign would be grateful for support. Like most candidates, active roles include door knocking & working polls on Election Day. We also anticipate needing volunteers to drive voters to & from the polls. If that’s too much- displaying car magnets or yard signs is also very helpful. Please reach out to Zach Hands or visit my website at www.emilyshankfordelegate.com

FROM MARIA WARBURTON (CARROLL COUNTY COMMISSIONER DISTRICT 3):

 1. Photographer. I’m looking to get a better head shot of myself for the website and other uses.
2. Submit Letters to the Editor. Carroll County Times only allows someone, including candidates, to submit a letter once a month. Letters can just be a testimonial or have specific talking points.
3. Social Media. Like my Facebook page (Maria Warburton for Carroll), follow Instagram (mariaforcountycommissioner2018) and Twitter (@Maria4Carroll).
4. Donations. No amount is too small. Donate thru my website mariawarburton.com by cc or mail a check. Funds will be for brochures, postcards, canvassing, perhaps billboard and ads.
5. Spread the word. Meet & greet at your home, canvass door-to-door, talk to people you know, post card writing/mailing.
6. Communications. Looking for a second volunteer to help with a few mass emailings. Meeting this Friday at 8 pm with someone if anyone is able to come along.
7. Publicity. Yard sign, car magnets/bumper stickers (I have a few – will order more if interest).
8. Election Day. Volunteer on Nov 6 and during early voting. Both for GOTV activities and at the poll being a presence.

Action-A-Day 6/20/18: Asylee Advocacy

Lots of options for actions on this topic! Pick one or pick all!

Option 1: Organize a carpool to the Baltimore Rally in Defense of Immigrants on Wednesday June 20, 2018 5p-7:30p at the ICE office at 40 S Gay Street in Baltimore.

Option 2: Gather friends to attend the Westminster Patriot Rally on Saturday June 23, 2018 1p-2p. Bring a sign to the rally to express your sentiments about supporting the asylee families that are being ripped apart at the border.

Option 3: Reach out to your federal reps and Governor Hogan to ask them to keep fighting for asylees. Call, fax, email, ResistBot or do them all! You can use Common Cause to identify your elected officials and locate their contact information.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: My name is _________ from (zip code) and I am calling to ask (elected official) to continue to fight on behalf of immigrant families who are seeking asylum in the US. The practice of separating families at the border is not required by law and is a cruel and inhumane practice. I am asking (elected official) to support legislation such as the "Keep Families Together Act" and other bills which protect immigrant families from being torn apart. Legislation takes time, please also keep the pressure on ICE and DOJ to stop the practice of separating these families NOW.

Regardless of which option(s) you choose to act on, please share this call to action far and wide!

Action-A-Day 2/8: Squash Trump's Marching Orders to the Pentagon

ACTION: Call you federal elected officials to ask them to speak out against Trump’s request for a military parade.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: My name is _____________ from (zip code) and I am calling to ask Senator/Representative_________________ to publicly speak about against President Trump’s desire for a military parade. In light of the federal budget crisis it would be irresponsible to spend millions on a parade. I’d rather know that our military members will be getting paid on time than have them driving tanks through DC. Thank you for your support.

DON’T KNOW WHO TO CALL?

You can also use RESISTBOT

BACKGROUND: Recently, 45 met with Pentagon officials to advance his plans for a military parade in DC that would end up costing taxpayers millions. 45 is trying to mimic the French Bastille Day Parade he attended last year. He has been quoted as saying “I want a parade like the one in France”. Many members of Congress and veterans have come out publicly saying the parade would be a huge waste of money. Others fear the spectacle would too closely resemble something an authoritarian head of state would demand in Russia or North Korea.

Action-A-Day Tuesday, 2/6/18 Support VOCAL Carroll County’s Petition for Ethics Compliance to State Law.

Carroll is now the ONLY county in Maryland that has not passed an ethics ordinance that complies with state law passed in 2010.  This petition tells County Board of Commissioners that the citizens demand action.  After 8 years of delay, we need transparency and the ability to hold elected and appointed officials to higher standards of ethical behavior.

Action-A-Day 1/25/18: No More Parental Rights for Rapists UPDATE

ACTION: Call your State delegation and ask that they support Maryland Senate Bill 0002 which would allow courts to terminate parental rights for rapists and is being called the Rape Survivor Family Protection Act.

BACKGROUND: The Rape Survivor Family Protection Act has been brought before the Maryland General Assembly and has FAILED TO PASS 9 times. This bill would allow women who conceive as a result of rape to terminate the parental rights of their rapist. Presently, Maryland is one of only a handful of states that does not already have a process in place for this. The Maryland General Assembly has returned to Annapolis and Governor Hogan is very publicly pushing for this legislation to be passed. The bill received a favorable finding from the Maryland Senate's Judicial Proceeding committee and is likely to come up for a vote in the VERY near future. Senator Hough (District 4) and Senator Ready (District 5) are both on the Judicial Proceedings committee which gave the bill unanimous support.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: My name is _________ from (zip code). I am calling to ask Senator_____________ to support the bipartisan Rape Survivor Family Protection Act and push for the bill to be voted on quickly. 10 years is too long to turn this bill into law. Thank you in advance.

Action-A-Day 1/18/18: Solicit GOP support for Net Neutrality restoration

ACTION: Call GOP members of the Senate Finance Committee’s Communications, Technology, Innovation and the Internet subcommittee 202-224-1251 to ask them to vote to reinstate net neutrality rules.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: I support "Title Two" net neutrality rules and I would like the members of this subcommittee to vote in support of the Congressional Act to reinstate net neutrality rules. We don’t need legislation, we need you to undo the harm done by the FCC in gutting the existing rules.

BACKGROUND INFO: Monday 1/15/18 Senators announced that all 47 Dems and 2 Ind, along with Rep Susan Collins of Maine, are fighting to force a vote to restore net neutrality rules by an act of Congress. Net neutrality ensures fair access to the internet content. Cable companies are famous for high prices and poor service. Several rank as the most hated companies in America. They've lobbied the FCC and Congress to end net neutrality. Why? It's simple: if they win the power to slow sites down, they can bully any site into paying millions to escape the "slow lane”. This would amount to a tax on every sector of the American economy. Every site would cost more, since they'd all have to pay big cable. Worse, it would extinguish the startups and independent voices who can't afford to pay. If we lose net neutrality, the Internet will never be the same. Attorney Generals from 22 states have filed suit against the FCC in response to the net neutrality repeal.

Action-A-Day for Tuesday, 1/9/18—— Follow Leadership Which Promotes Civility

Leadership and lessons can come from surprising places.  We are all accustomed to listening to our elders and experts for advice, for perspectives we may not yet have experienced.   But sometimes, we need a different wisdom that comes from the trenches.  We need a fresh voice of youth to remind us of what 'that' looks and feels like.  Someone to take us back for the “redo” that we otherwise can never have.

Action-A-Day, FOR Monday, 1/10/18 : Ask for Equal Enforcement of School Policies!

Across the country in our schools, icons of hatred and destruction are being allowed on articles of clothing, backpacks, phone cases and more.  Some say they are merely historical symbols.  Meanwhile aggressive attitudes and de-meaning actions and often violence are resultant.  When a policy exists, it must be followed and if necessary, enforced.  It's time to request, to expect, equal enforcement of our school policies so all students can excel in their learning environments.
