ACTION-A-DAY 9/7: Save DACA

ACTION-A-DAY 9/7: Save DACA

ACTION: Complete the ACLU’S online form to ask your Congressional representatives to protect America’s Dreamers through DACA.

WHERE TO FIND THE FORM: ACLU webform

SAMPLE SCRIPT FOR PHONE CALLS TO CONGRESS (Taken from the ACLU form): I urge Rep/Senator __________ to sponsor and pass the bipartisan Dream Act of 2017. These young people came to the U.S. as children. America is their only home. Every one of them risks losing their work authorization and being deported. And our country will lose their talents and skills.

BACKGROUND INFO: The Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals (aka DACA) is a policy enacted by the Obama administration in 2012. The policy applies to children who arrived in the US illegally when they were 16 years or younger. DACA allows these folks to have deportation delayed for 2 years and to obtain employment authorization during that time. The DACA certification has been renewable and can be reapplied for every 2 years. Research has shown that DACA has greatly reduced the number of immigrant households living in poverty in the US and has added to the American workforce and has raised enrollment in America’s institutions of higher learning.

#45 has declared that he is ending DACA and since it was never passed as law, only implemented as policy, he has the power to do so. Effective earlier this week deadlines were set for the final DACA renewals. DACA is now in the hands of Congress. Congress has the power to save DACA by passing it into law.

Action-A-Day 8/31: Demand FAIR Tax Reform

ACTION: Call BOTH of your Senators to Demand FAIR Tax Reform

SAMPLE SCRIPT: Hello, my name is _____ from (zip code). I am calling because I am opposed to any tax plans that cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans on the backs of lower and middle class families by way of reducing funding for social programs. I expect Senator (name) to work towards a tax reform plan that is fair and just. Thank you for your time.

SENATOR VAN HOLLEN 202-224-4654
SENATOR CARDIN 202-224-4524

BACKGROUND INFO:  In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, #45 has been busy promoting his plan for tax “reform”. Not surprisingly, this plan will put an even larger financial burden middle and working classes.

Since this proposal is not favored by DEMs, GOP members of Congress are planning to use the plan to use the budget reconciliation. This process means that the bill is not allowed to add to the federal deficit. The only way to do that is to reduce spending on programs that benefit lower and middle class Americans, such as Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

The proposed GOP plan would cut the corporate tax rate from 35% to 15% and eliminate the alternative minimum tax (AMT). These changes that would greatly benefit already wealthy Americans.  A prime example being that without the AMT, 45’s 2005 tax rate would have been a mere 3.5%.

Action-A-Day 8/17: Tell Congress that Bannon, Gorka and Miller Must Go

Tell Congress: Bannon, Gorka and Miller Must Go
Trump aides Stephen Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, and Stephen Miller empowered the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who terrorized the streets of Charlottesville.

White supremacy has no place in the White House, and our Members of Congress must not remain silent. Call on your Member of Congress to demand the immediate removal of all White House staff who espouse white nationalism in words and policy.

Bannon, Gorka & Miller cannot be allowed to remain in positions of power, driving a resurgence of white nationalism in America.

BACKGROUND
We must always take sides.
— Elie Wiesel

What happened in Charlottesville was the inevitable result of Trump’s Administration and agenda. By fomenting hatred against — and scapegoating — people of color, Muslims, immigrants, women, the poor, and Jews, Stephen Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, and Stephen Miller empowered the white supremacist alt-right who took over the streets of Charlottesville with torches, guns, and pipes, chanting anti-Jewish hatred, beating people of color, and killing Heather Heyer.

These three men, all members of President Trump’s inner circle, have championed the anti-Semitic, racist, neo-Nazi movement that chanted “Jews will not replace us,” gave the Nazi salute, and stoked the deadly violence in Charlottesville this past weekend.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [YOUR TOWN]. I urge [NAME OF MEMBER OF CONGRESS] to call on the White House to fire all members of the President's top circle who are closely tied to the white nationalist neo-Nazi movement responsible for the terror in Charlottesville — including Stephen Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, and Stephen Miller. Action-A-Day 8/3: Keep consumer banking protections in place

ACTION: Call your senators and ask that they oppose  HJ Resolution 111 which would prevent consumers from participating in class action lawsuits against financial institutions.

SAMPLE SCRIPT: Hello. My name is _____ from [zip code]. I am calling to urge Senator [name] to vote no to HJ Resolution 111 which would overturn the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's arbitration rule. The CFPB's rule protects consumers from predatory lending practices.

Senator Chris VanHollen 202-224-4654
Senator Ben Cardin 202-224-4524

BACKGROUND INFO: Many financial instituions use mandatory arbitration clauses in their agreements and contracts which mandate that consumers use private arbitration companies to settle disputes, rather than the court system. These clauses prevent consumers from being able to join class action lawsuits when they are  the victims of predatory and illegal banking practices. July 10, 2017 the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a new rule that bans these mandatory arbitration clauses. On July 20, 2017 Representative Keith Rothfus of Pennsylvania introduced a resolution to the House to overturn this rule and on July 25, 2017 it passed in the House 231 to 190 thanks to the GOP members.  The rule was created by the CFBP to protect consumers and it is now being threatened by GOP leaders who accept millions in campaign contributions from major financial institutions.
