Maryland Sierra Club's Top Legislative Priorities for 2018

1.  Protect Maryland’s forests by strengthening the Forest Conservation Act – Forests promote clean air and water, combat climate change, provide wildlife habitat, and are key to restoring the Chesapeake Bay. Our current law is failing to stem the loss of thousands of acres of trees each year. Forest Conservation Fact Sheet

2.  Ban foam food containers and loose-fill packaging – These are some of the most pervasive products littering our landscapes and waterways and, after breaking into tiny pieces, absorb toxic chemicals that are then eaten by fish, birds, and other wildlife.  Banning foam products will have a major impact, as demonstrated by successful local bans enacted in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Foam Containers Fact Sheet

3.  Secure dedicated funding for metropolitan DC’s Metro system – Hundreds of thousands of Marylanders rely on Metro, significantly reducing the number of polluting vehicles on our roadways; now our region must step up to provide Metro with the funding needed for important system updates and improvements.  Metro Funding Fact Sheet

4.  Reform Public Service Commission (PSC) review methods for new gas infrastructure – Following on our incredible victory in banning fracking in Maryland, we need to prevent new, additional gas infrastructure from being built in our state.  This legislation will require improved notice to communities when gas infrastructure proposals are submitted to the PSC, and more extensive PSC analysis of community health impacts.  Reform PSC Fact Sheet
