The Problem with Civility: Being Less ‘Decent’ and Building Better Bridges for a Global Community

  • McDaniel College Decker College Center Forum 2 College Hill Westminster, MD, 21157 United States (map)

Please join us for the Global Issues Colloquium on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 6:00 pm the Decker College Center, Forum “The Problem with Civility: Being Less ‘Decent’ and Building Better Bridges for a Global Community.” Presented by, Assistant Professor of Communication, Dr. Erin Watley.

“Speak kindly. Listen to others. Control your emotions. Treat everyone equally.” These are some of the basic skills that we are taught to get along with people who are different than ourselves, or to maintain decorum in the face of conflict.

How then, should we adjust when these assumed basic rules of polite human interaction have also been shown to deepen cultural divisions and uphold oppressive norms?

During this interactive presentation, Dr. Watley will discuss how emphasizing civility can have negative repercussions on global and local community relations. She will present practical tools for de-emphasizing civility when cultural clashes occur in order to build community connections and facilitate interactions that are more culturally conscious. Come ready to explore and practice skills that challenge your ideas of decency and broaden the way you participate in intercultural exchanges.”
